Guernsey in bloom – our horticultural heroes
Each year Guernsey’s pretty winding lanes, buildings and public spaces are festooned with vivacious and vibrant floral displays. Each parish has its own horticultural character but all are striving for the common goal of preserving and enhancing the natural environment of our small but perfectly formed island.
In this series of videos commissioned by VisitGuernsey, we meet some of the people behind the planting and the caretakers of our trees and hedgerows.
In our first video we meet Phil Merrien, Parks and Gardens General Manager who explains the year-round planning behind the blooms that grace Guernsey’s parks, harbour front, roundabouts and public buildings.
Our next film introduces Marguerite Talmage from the Floral St Peter’s Group who explains how an army of volunteers helped to make the parish of St Peter’s a gold award winner in the Britain in Bloom competition.
In our final instalment, Gill Thwaite from St Andrew’s Floral Committee explains the island-wide collaboration with the RHS and Woodland Trust to plant new trees as well as their initiatives to plant native hedgerows and encourage wildlife and biodiversity for the future.
